The snow has melted but we are still freezing! To celebrate this beautiful winter weather, my family and I headed to Ober Gatlinburg for a fun filled weekend!

Trips are usually a few hours. And a few hours, much less 30 minutes, in a car with a 6 year old sister and 8 year old brother confined in a car seems like the trip takes eons! So we use “movie time” to make trips go by faster! For example, our trip this past weekend was about an hour and a half, which is about 1 movie. We chose Kung Fu Panda and before we knew it, we arrived in Gatlinburg!

We decided to go night tubing, which was a really cool experience! So we had a few hours to spare before we headed up to the mountain. We grabbed lunched and walked through the stores downtown. Jaecee Rae, Mom, and I went through every candy shop! It was so much fun!

That night we headed back to the slopes, all bundled up for a night of tubing!

Red Dress Dash

Months of preparation, conference calls, event planning guides and everything else under the sun is set for the National Go Red For Women ‘Red Dress Dash’ coming up this Friday in NYC. I’ll be joining my friends, Shermane, Eva and Tamara whom I met at the launch party last September. These women are Go Red Women, survivors, whom you’ve seen in the collateral and commercials promoting the Go Red campaign.

Also joining me this Friday in NYC will be Nick Verreos whom you might remember from Project Runway, Starr Jones and Elizabeth Banks, and a super star in my eyes, and sister queen, Elizabeth Malvasia.

Seeing RED!

February is Heart month! So you know what that means….you’ll be seeing RED! Throughout the month, the American Heart Association will be in overdrive. On February 3, you can show your support by wearing red. You can also participate in your local Go Red Luncheon.

But it doesn’t end there. The AHA’s Go Red For Women campaign will be hosting numerous events and launching initiatives throughout the entire month in an effort to fight heart disease by increasing awareness. Various celebrities, public figures and politicians will be lending a hand to promote the Go Red for Women Campaign. And not to be outdone, International titleholders are sure to be on the scene, telling our stories, encouraging people to live heart healthy lifestyles and learning new ways to better our own heart health. Reading Therapy Dogs

In an effort to help children who are struggling with literacy, many schools and libraries are enlisting the help of some irresistibly cute, furry friends. Reading Therapy Dogs are being used to provide encouragement and support to children who are struggling with reading. It’s an innovative concept that brings together children with the unconditional love and loyalty shown by dogs. So how does it work? Children read to specially trained dogs. The dog acts as an unbiased listener who displays his support and encouragement by being a captive audience member. And of course, a dog displays no criticism or judgment. This is especially important because it helps to ease the anxiety level of a child who is fearful of reading aloud.

As a result, children gain confidence in their ability to read aloud. Confidence, which is a key component in literacy success, leads to an overall escalation in the child’s reading ability. Children who participate in programs show a remarkable increase in literacy skills and resulting in higher test scores. Reading therapy dogs are used throughout the country. Not Quite My Cup of Tea!

Cheerio! No, not the cereal! Cheerio is another way to say goodbye in England. And I will be saying “Cheerio!” to the states when I travel to none other than-England! That’s right! I am taking my first international trip to England! I love traveling and can’t wait to tour this beautiful country!

This past Friday I went to get my passport. As soon as I got out of my car, the door came back and jarred me right in the middle of the forehead! There was a huge dent in it! By the time I sat down to take my official passport photo, which is good for 10 years, the dent became a knot the size of a quarter! How embarrassing! No makeup could cover that!

Can you see the bump? Because it’s definitely noticeable in the official photo!

There is still a bruise and my forehead is still a little sore, but nonetheless, England will be a “smashing” good time!

At NASCAR Acceleration 2012 presented by Sprint event in Charlotte, attendees were able to snag the 2012 edition NASCAR Unites arm band. This annual program, offers fans and supporters around the world the ability to declare their dedication to helping those in need. These arm bands are available online and at-track throughout the race season.

NASCAR Unites is an industry initiative led by The NASCAR Foundation that creates an opportunity for NASCAR fans, drivers, teams, tracks, sponsors and more to unite to improve the lives of children across the nation. Holocaust Memorial Day

This past July when I had a little bit of down time during the 2011 Miss Teen International pageant in Chicago, I toured the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center. I could have spent an entire day there, learning about this devasting event in history and remembering the victims of this tragedy.

January 27^th is Holocaust Memorial Day and International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. I encourage you to take a moment and pause for these silent victims today.

Hitler’s “Final Solution” was to kill all German Jews, as well as Gypsies, Jehovah’s Witnesses, the mentally and physically disabled, and anyone who resisted Nazi power, in order to restore Germany after the harsh reparations placed on them after World War I.

11 million people suffered but the sympathizing hearts are countless.

NASCAR Goes Red

If you are a multi-tasker, like myself, you don’t ever find yourself at a loss for ways to help. As many know, the Super Bowl and 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will start in just a month. This is also the time of year for NASCAR Sprint Media Tour Week where journalists from around the world visit Charlotte, North Carolina for all the big announcements prior to the start of the race season. But, while the world is mesmerized by planning their Super Bowl gatherings, and watch parties for the Daytona 500, please remember February is also National Heart Month.

As Mrs. International, being a volunteer and advocate for the American Heart Association has been a wonderful opportunity. I am honored to have been selected as the emcee for the Go Red for Women event in NYC for National Wear Red Day on Friday, February 3rd. Countless hours have been invested behind the scenes to make sure this event is a success along with other local market activation.

I am very appreciative of the support from NASCAR. In the month of February, the NASCAR logo on the NASCAR Plaza building in Uptown Charlotte will be illuminated bright red in support of National Heart Month. Visitors to the NASCAR Plaza and NASCAR Hall of Fame, which is connected to the NASCAR Plaza, will also be able to view the Survivor Gallery in the lobby, cut-out red dress posters and messaging throughout the building and in the elevators.

I encourage you to contact your local AHA office, or visit their website. There are many ways you can raise awareness for National Wear Red Day on Friday, February 3rd and National Heart Month this February.

Resurrection 2012

Over 5,000 teens from all over East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia gathered in Gatlinburg, TN this past weekend for one incredible experience: Resurrection 2012! Resurrection is a Christian youth conference held annually since 1985 to remind teens that they are not alone in their walk with Christ.

Even though the weather was rainy, the clouds didn’t stop us from having an incredible worship experience! Reggie Dabbs was our speaker. He is a foster care child and grew up dealing with suicide. His message to us was that no matter where we come from or what your past is, God has a new path set out for you. Not only was he absolutely hilarious, but he related with well with us. One of my favorite Christian bands performed as well-Leeland! Saturday night they took over the stage and led us in worship. It was such a great experience to sing to our God with such an awesome band.

My friend, Courtney Woolwine, came along with me! I am so thankful that she was able to be there to experience the conference with me!

Over 5,000 people squished together to worship 1 God!

During our free time, the girls in my youth group and I played games and snacked at our cabin. We played a game where one person would be blindfolded and had to apply makeup to her partner’s face! That was definitely a knee slapper!

Resurrection was a moving experience I am very thankful for. The new friendships that were made and fellowships that were shared is definitely something I will never forget. "And the man jumped up, grabbed his mat, and walked out through the stunned onlookers. They were all amazed and praised God, exclaiming, 'We've never seen anything like this before!'" -Mark 2:12

Be an Angel-Buy a Bracelet- Save a Life!

Did you know that on average, 3,000 children die everyday from Malaria? Malaria is an easily treatable and preventable disease. It is a mosquito borne infectious disease that is transmitted through a single mosquito bite. With the exception of very rare cases, Malaria has been eliminated in the United States. However, it still poses a serious risk to people living in sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and certain regions of South America.

Malaika For Life is dedicated to eradicating Malaria. Malaika means angel in Swahili, and through the sale of bracelets, Malaika For Life acts as an angel for thousands of children who are at risk for contacting Malaria. So how does it work? The bracelets sold by Malaika For Life are made by women in the Tamiha Women’s Program, which is an organization dedicated to empowering impoverished women in Tanzania.

$5 from the sale of each bracelet goes towards the purchase and distribution of malaria medication. $5 may seem like a nominal amount of money. But, lifesaving malaria medication costs $10, which is a small fortune to those living in the most affected regions. The remaining goes towards expenses and wages for the women. Not only is Malaika For Life leading the fight against malaria, but it is also supporting economic development. New Workouts!

I get bored with the same old workout routine. I love running, however… there are times when I’m on the treadmill and I can’t help but think “Who the heck am I running from?!?!” So here are 5 new activities that will add some spice to your workout routine. As with anything, please consult your physician before taking part in any and all exercises.

Barre Classes: When you think of a ballerina’s body, you think of a strong, muscular, yet feminine physique. I’ve always taken ballet classes for that very reason. I’ve found them to be a great way to stay toned and in shape. I’ve recently discovered and fallen in love with barre classes. Barre classes provide me with the best that ballet has to offer. Using ballet barre exercises, barre classes help you sculpt a dancer’s body. Some even fuse barre exercises with pilates. It is an intense and fun way to build strength and muscle.

Zumba: The name is enough to get you excited! Zumba is a high energy latin- dance inspired exercise program. One class and you will be hooked! A lot of people are intimidated by the dance moves, but there is no need to let your inhibitions get the best of you. Based on my experience, you’re too busy having fun and sweating to worry about messing up!

Indoor Rock Climbing: I envy those who are brave enough to go outside and climb a magnificent rock. While I’m sure that it is exhilarating, I am risk averse, and therefore indoor rock climbing is the thing for me. It’s one of those things that looks easy, but once you’re on the wall, it’s a different story! It works out muscles that you didn’t even know that you had!

Fitness Boot Camp: I love a good boot camp! Fitness boot camps are a form of group exercise that are usually led by a single instructor. Typically, you are taken through a series of exercise circuits. Boot camps come in many forms, however, I prefer short term boot camps (2 to 4 weeks) as a way of adding intensity or jump starting my workout routine. In your face instructors and exhausting exercises keep you motivated and on your toes!

Spinning: Spinning is a great work out! But I will warn you, as far as workouts go, it is an acquired taste :) It’s one of those things that I do when I need swift kick in the rear! The first spin class that I took, I almost quit half way through! My pride was the only thing that made me stay. Either way, if you decide to take a spin class be prepared, go at your own pace and enjoy the ride!

Take a Stand

Why are there so many issues that we face today? Our government has taken the initiative to intercede on many problems and try to fix them. But why are 50,000 people forced into slavery in the U.S.? Why are 3 million American children abused every year? Why are 6 million animals euthanized every year? Because it is our duty to be a voice for the silent. It is up to us to create change for those suffering from the statistics.

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.” –Mahatma Gandhi. These immortal words will always be treasured, because Gandhi truly lived his life as a selfless act to others. He saw that he himself could change things if he set his heart and mind to it. His words have also impacted me to fight for what I believe in. It makes me almost sick to think that an animal is injected with a lethal weapon and killed every 6 seconds just because no one will take care of it. I wish there was a magic trick or a word I could say to completely end that madness. Realistically, that can’t happen. But there’s the beauty of it! We were made to stand up for what we believe in. We were made to reach out and help others.

With the touch of a button or the click of a mouse, we can now have food prepared for us, items shipped to us, and music amusing us. It is so easy to become spoiled from these things. We get caught in our own little world and pay no attention to what’s happening in the world around us. “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” –Mahatma Gandhi. Another great quote with an everlasting message. Developing countries have little to no access to technology, let alone food, shelter, and water. These people are crying out for help, and we need to wake up and listen to their calling.

One of the best ways I have used to get my message out is through pageantry. Wearing the crown is like speaking into an open microphone. The world is your audience and you are in control of how you influence others.

On the floor of the Tennessee House of Representatives after the Speaker of the House announced my Joint Resolution No. 1268. I had the opportunity to address all of the Representatives and thank them. I was touched and honored to receive a standing ovation on my way out.

Everyone has a purpose. So I encourage you to take heart and find something you are passionate about changing. Get the word out through family, friends, and anyone who will listen. Because if you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything.

Teacher's Aid

The best way to celebrate Friday 13^th is driving to work to receive a frantic phone call from your mother who has just taken a hard fall, on ice and she “thinks” her wrist is broken. Fast forward four days later, and she is back to teaching. She’s a high school art teacher. She loves her career and embraces all the creativity of every single student who walks into her classroom - for her that was motivation enough to make sure she was there for the start of the new semester.

A quick flight (thank you US Air for upgrading me to first class) and I was back in Ohio, helping her adjust to life with limitations. Her surgeon gave her permission to go back to teaching, but she’s not able to drive for a couple weeks. The outpouring of support and help from former students, the teaching staff and co-workers has been overwhelming and heartwarming. When I return to Charlotte, I know she’ll be in great hands.

Upon returning to Charlotte, I will be hitting the ground running with the NASCAR Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, NASCAR Acceleration presented by Sprint, the Monster Jam at Time Warner Cable Arena and then celebrating my birthday. Thank you to all who have sent well wishes. We are very blessed to be surrounded by so many wonderful people.

Reflecting on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

This past Thursday, I spent the evening reading Martin’s Big Words by Doreen Rappaport to a group of 3 to 5 year olds. I started off by asking, “Who’s birthday is this month.” I got a ton of hands. “Mine is January 8th,” “Mine is January 26th,” and then finally one little girl said “Martin’s birthday is this month.” I didn’t expect that from a four year old, but I was pleasantly surprised and responded, “Yes, and do you know what he did?” She took a moment to collect her thoughts and said, “He taught people to love and take care of each other.” I couldn’t have said it better myself.

In a single sentence, a four year old summed up the importance of MLK Day. Yes, it is a day off, but it is also a time for reflecting on how great our country is. It is a time to celebrate the sacrifices of millions of Americans and to take pride in the fact that our country is a more perfect union as a result of what has and continues to be sacrificed by each of us on a daily basis. Before I got to the end of the book, one little boy raised his hand and told me that he did not like how it was going to end. Before I could respond, the same little girl chimed in, “It doesn’t end bad, my mommy says his dream is still alive.”

Snow Day

After waiting weeks and months for snow, it finally came! And my little brother, Daxx, and little sister, Jaecee Rae, and I did our part by playing in it!

Jaecee Rae wanted to make snow angels everywhere! One of her favorite things is to eat snow cream! I had her gather up some snow and I then added the “special ingredients” to make snow cream! She ate it all!

Daxx loved tormenting my little sister and me by throwing snow balls at us!

We also made snow slushies, a delicious treat! Hopefully this won’t be the last snow, because we are ready to head back out in a blizzard again!

Crowning Miss Teen Virginia International 2012

Last weekend I crowned the new 2012 Miss Teen Virginia International – Tiana Dockery!

The ceremony was very intimate with Tiana’s close family and friends, along with Miss Teen Virginia International director – Tiffany Porter, her mother – Robin Porter, my little sister Jaecee Rae – Little Miss Virginia International, my mother, and me! Food City of Kingsport was so kind to let us have our crowning ceremony at their Crowning Center. The name of the location was perfect for what we were there to do!

Food City supplied the delicious food, like this beautifully made cake! Jaecee Rae took her share of brownies for dinner! After our dinner, Tiffany Porter spoke about the International Pageant system and what our purpose is. Then it was my turn to speak. I gave Tiana some advice about her upcoming year and what a fun experience nationals will be in Chicago!

After I spoke, it was crowning time! Tiana was in tears as I placed the crown on her head! She gave a speech after her crowning, thanking Mary and Mel Richardson, Clay Spann, Joey Rutherford, and Tiffany and Robin Porter for all their hard work and dedication to the International Pageant System.

AHA Recommendation for Physical Activity

For overall health benefits to the heart, lungs and circulation, perform any moderate- to vigorous-intensity aerobic activity using the following guidelines:

•Get the equivalent of at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity (2 hours and 30 minutes) each week.

•You can incorporate your weekly physical activity with 30 minutes a day on at least five days a week.

•Physical activity should be performed in episodes of at least 10 minutes, and preferably, it should be spread throughout the week.

•Include flexibility and stretching exercises.

•Include muscle strengthening activity at least two days each week.

Yoga could boost heart health!

The history of yoga stretches back as far as ancient India, when people practiced it to increase their tranquility and spiritual insight. Today, many Americans enjoy it to help them relax and increase their flexibility — and may even improve their heart health. However, yoga does not count towards physical activity requirements of 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity per week.

Traditional yoga is done by slowly stretching the body into a variety of poses while focusing on breathing and meditation. “Yoga is designed to bring about increased physical, mental and emotional well-being,” said M. Mala Cunningham, Ph.D., counseling psychologist and founder of Cardiac Yoga. “Hand in hand with leading a heart-healthy lifestyle, it really is possible for a yoga-based model to help prevent or reverse heart disease. It may not completely reverse it, but you will definitely see benefits.”

Yoga can be used to improve heart health as a preventive measure or after facing a cardiac event, said Cunningham, who has taught yoga for 40 years and is also president of Positive Health Solutions.

Why yoga?

Thinking prevention? As part of an overall healthy lifestyle, Cunningham said yoga can help lower blood pressure, increase lung capacity, improve respiratory function and heart rate, and boost circulation and muscle tone. It can also improve your overall well-being while offering strength-building benefits.

Yoga also has proven benefits for those who have faced cardiac arrest, heart attack or other heart event, according to Cunningham. “The acute emotional stress of such an event certainly has a significant and adverse effect on the heart,” she said. “That’s where yoga can be a tremendous benefit to manage the stress.” For example, Cunningham said that half of bypass surgery patients go through depression, facing emotions ranging from anxiety to grieving. “All these things come into play when you’ve got a potentially chronic disease to manage for the rest of your life.”

The calming benefits of yoga may help with that — and you may see benefits right away. After your first yoga class, your blood pressure will likely be lower, you’ll be relaxed and you’ll feel better, Cunningham said.

Long-term, sustained yoga may play a role in improving overall health, according to Cunningham.

“The more energy you put into it, the more you’re going to get out of it,” she said. “After 12 weeks, you may see a dramatic increase in exercise functionality, and blood pressure and cholesterol levels may decrease.”

If you have heart disease, diabetes or are obese, check with your doctor before starting a yoga program. “I highly recommend going to a qualified and trained cardiac medical yoga instructor,” Cunningham said. Have you met the Hip Hop Doc?

Rani G. Whitfield, M.D. is the Hip Hop Doc! His mission is simple: to educate youth and raise awareness of health related issues such as cardiovascular disease and obesity through the use of music. The Hip Hop Doc recently wrote an article for the American Heart Association entitled, “Making Heart Health a Habit,” in which he gave tips on how to break old unhealthy habits and how to create new positive habits. After reading his article, I have pinpointed some habits that I need to kick to the curb! Did you know that it takes 60 to 90 days to create a new habit? That is a scary fact! But, the Hip Hop Doc has great tips to help you break your bad habits and replace them with new ones.

(1) Break a big goal into smaller short-term goals. Habits are difficult to break, so it is important not to expect too much from yourself, too soon. Instead, break your large goal into smaller more manageable goals. For example, if your large goal is to exercise five days a week, start off by committing to one day a week, then increase to two days a week and so on, until you reach your goal. That way, you don’t get frustrated with yourself and burn yourself out by trying too much too soon.

(2) Tell someone you trust. There is no better workout partner than Mr. or Mrs. Accountability! No matter what your goal is, it is important to tell someone you trust so that they can help you by holding you accountable. It’s easy to blow yourself off but, it’s a lot harder to disappoint someone that you care about.

(3) Allow a “cheat” once in a while. I know it sounds like blasphemy! But, yes, the Hip Hop Doc recommends a “cheat” Once in a while. Not everyday folks!

(4) Break the TV habit in favor of exercise. TV can be a welcome diversion but when it comes to your health, TV can be the ultimate foe. A lot of people have the best of intentions when it comes to exercising but, once in front of the TV, the X Factor is too hard to resist! You tell yourself that you will only watch 15 minutes and then you will go exercise. Before you know it, 15 minutes has turned into 1 hour and your window of free time has vanished. Break the TV habit by using your favorite shows as a reward or by using tools such as Tivo. If there is something that I absolutely can’t miss, I move all of my furniture, lay out a mat, jump rope and weights, and I do interval training while I watch my show. It sounds nuts, but you can easily crank out 200 crunches during a commercial break!

There is no better time than the present! Get started today!

One Year Ago

During my drive home from my first day back in the office, my mind was running through all the activities I had going on a year ago. My husband and I had committed to help promote The NASCAR Foundation by competing in the Mrs. North Carolina International Pageant, and so I had stepped up my workout program and filled every free minute preparing for the crown. I remember organizing how I’d juggle working for NASCAR and taking on being Mrs. NCI and hopefully Mrs. International, but then remind myself – one step at a time.

It had been 15 years since I competed in a pageant, so hindsight was 20/20. Interview was not my strong suit, so I wanted to make that my first hurdle to conquer. During my 45-minute drive to-and-from work each day, I’d listen to my “Interview Me” CD’s. And, since my commute usually took place either very early morning or late night, I didn’t have to worry about others watching me talk aloud to answer questions during daylight hours. I also would review my personal binder, which
I had started keeping with me at all times. In this binder, I had jotted down my thoughts on current events and other topics that meant something to me.

Aside from my husband being my constant cheerleader, and reminding me “there are no points for second place” (race analogies are fairly constant in our home), I had let my mind become a sponge to absorb all the advice from many pageant resources and those with some truly inspiring experience. My friend and Mrs. International 1998, Lisa Moser, had taken me under her wing to help inspire me. She truly embodies everything about the International Pageant System, is a gorgeous mother to four beautiful children and a fabulous husband, and lives her platform – the same one she won the title promoting as Mrs. Ohio International 1998 and continued with as Mrs. International 1998.

Since many contestants use the platform of pageantry to raise awareness for a cause close to them, I too felt I was SO close to my platform of being a champion for children for The NASCAR Foundation
that I wouldn’t think of questions a judge may ask. So, I reached out to my friends in the media, shared with them my platform, and then asked them to “throw it at me” and ask every question that came to their mind. It was also truly amazing the outpouring of advice and help from them, along with former contestants and state titleholders whom I had competed against “back-in-the-day” and who have become lifelong friends.

I also had my awesome mother. Never underestimate the advice of your Mom, regardless of your age. She constantly reminded me that her advice is always available and free. I’d always talked about all of
my volunteer efforts with The NASCAR Foundation, and she jokes that she feels like she too has met all the people I’d helped. Being four states away, I had the chance to talk through my intro with her to
share both in the interview room and on-stage so we could work on tone, inflection and delivery. She also kept reminding me that there is a difference between believing in what you say and how you emote your delivery.

During the holidays I chatted with an old friend. (So old he actually watched my mother being crowned in her first pageant.) We talked about preparation and what I felt helped me win. When I competed 15 years ago, I was overwhelmed with advice, critiques and opinions from a barrage of resources. This time, I simply soaked in all of that and mentally filed it until I needed it.

If you are reading this and either one of those who have already won their State, or are preparing to compete in a State pageant, I hope my journey down memory lane may help. Believe in yourself, put forth the effort and keep your focus. You just might be the person I’ll be crowning in July!

New Year

2012 is finally here! It seems as though 2011 was just a quick glance in the rearview mirror! Although it seemed to speed by, many memories were made and goals were accomplished in 2011. As a celebration for the new year, my family threw a celebration!

Acting crazy as I deal out cards!

The very last day of 2011 was such a blast! My grandmother, mother, and I made all kinds of delicious food! We snacked all day on their homemade dips! We played Password and a card game called Rotten until the ball dropped at midnight!

My little brother and sister even had friends stay over!

My little brother, Daxx, and his friend were glued to their Nintendo’s, while my little sister, Jaecee Rae, and her friend were playing dress-up and putting makeup on each other.

My friends Michael Harr, Tiffany Porter, and Charity Dinsmore joined us as well! There really was no better way to bring in the new year than with the people I love!

After a whirlwind of planning meetings with the American Heart Association for National Heart Month coming up in February, Christmas with the family and a much needed vacation from the office, Chip and I opted to bring in the new year, in Atlanta, at the Zak Brown Band concert at Philips Arena. This is the second year for the band to perform on NYE, in their backyard, and it was another truly outstanding performance. We even were part of their live performance around the world on CNN with Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin!

It was a fabulous evening to connect with old friends and learn more about the latest project for the Zak Brown Band. In addition to a new album in the works, they are building Camp Southern Ground. Their mission is to build a camp to allow children to overcome academic, social and emotional difficulties so they may reach their full potential by providing them with the opportunity and tools necessary to become prominent leaders in our society and to achieve excellence in all facets of their lives.

Camp Southern Ground is the passion project of GRAMMY-Award winning musician Zac Brown. Zac donated this 500-acre piece of property, set in the farmlands of Georgia forty minutes south of Atlanta, to begin Camp Southern GroundÂ—what will soon become a state-of-the-art
facility that practices cutting-edge programs to assist and rehabilitate children with neurobehavioral and learning difficulties (including ADD/ADHD, Dyslexia, Tourette's Syndrome, Asperger's Syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorders as well as serve children with diverse backgrounds and socio-economic levels). Zac is the father of four and, while none of his own children are afflicted by any of these disorders, he has long recognized the necessity for every child to have access to the best resources in order to be able to grow and succeed. First Book Rocks 2011!

First Book has been a little busy… That may be the understatement of the year! First Book has been very busy spreading the message of the importance of literacy and pursuing its mission of ensuring that all children have access to high quality reading materials. First Book has fostered new relationships and strengthened existing relationships. But most importantly, First Book has put a dent in the greatest barrier to literacy, access to books.

During 2011, First Book Distributed 8 Million Books! But it doesn’t stop there! First Book added 7,000 new schools and programs to its national network. This means that 7,000 additional schools and programs are now eligible for grants and have access to First Book’s Book Bank where they can buy brand new books at a fraction of the price, $2.50. First Book also started local volunteer chapters (First Book Advisory Boards) in over a dozen communities. I can’t wait to see what 2012 brings!

In Memory of Ben

I believe that angels come to us in many forms. Ben Breedlove was an angel. Ben Breedlove is a Texas teen who passed away on Christmas Day as a result of his life long battle with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a deteriorating condition that causes a thickening of the heart muscle, leading to cardiac arrest. Days before he passed away, he posted a video on YouTube chronicling his battle with heart disease. Using something as simple, yet powerful as handwritten note cards, he told the story of a young man who had cheated death since he was four.

After watching his video I was left in tears, saddened by the fact that a dynamic young man was taken from this world at such a young age. But, I was also left with a sense of peace. I was happy that Ben had gone on to a better place. His courage and wisdom had a lasting impact on me and the millions of others whom have viewed his videos. He taught me a valuable lesson: Use your time wisely. It’s not so important how long you live. What really matters is how you live. By virtue of our being on this Earth, we have immeasurable potential to have a positive impact on the lives of those around us. Each day represents a new opportunity to fulfill our potential. Put another way, each day represents a new opportunity for us to turn our potential energy into kinetic energy. By overcoming our personal inertia (self doubt, low self-esteem, worrying), we can truly begin to Go For It. One can only imagine the impact that would have on the world.

Over-the-Counter Medications and HBP

As we head into the "season of sickness" as I refer to it, here are some helpful things to remember when looking to purchase OTC medications. Always read the labels on all over-the-counter (OTC) medications, especially if you have blood pressure of 120/80 mm Hg or greater. Look for warnings to those with high blood pressure and to those who take blood pressure medications. Better yet, if you have high blood pressure and certainly if you are on prescription medication, consult your healthcare professional before taking any over-the-counter medications or supplements.

Don't fall for "magic pill" claims. There are no special pills, vitamins or drinks that can substitute for prescriptions and lifestyle modifications. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking any OTC drug or supplement that claims to lower your blood pressure. They may not work as advertised, and they may interfere with other medications.

Decongestants may raise your blood pressure. People with high blood pressure should be aware that the use of decongestants may raise blood pressure or interfere with the effectiveness of some prescribed blood pressure medications. Many over-the-counter cold and flu preparations contain decongestants such as:

Ephedrine

Levmetamfetamine

Naphazoline

Oxymetazoline

Phenylephrine

Phenylpropanolamine

Propylhexedrine

Pseudoephedrine

Synephrine

Tetrahydrozoline

Check the sodium content. Some OTCs are high in sodium, which can also raise blood pressure. Look at the active and inactive ingredients lists for words like "sodium" or "soda." Making a Difference

“Students Who Make a Difference recognizes area teens who go above and beyond to serve their schools, churches, communities or the world at large through selfless service. Each year, nominees are accepted during November, and selected teens are profiled in INK’s annual Students Who Make a Difference edition the Wednesday before Christmas.”

It is an honor to be named one of the Kingsport Times-News “Students Who Make a Difference”! People from all around the area submit articles on why they think their student should be the one chosen for this prestigious honor. I was fortunate enough to be selected!

This honor gave me the chance to tell my story and hopefully inspire others to achieve their dreams. I love helping animals and giving back to the community, not so I can be recognized with an award, but because it is my calling.

Elbow Room

Five weeks ago I fractured the radial head in my left elbow during a basketball game. Here is how it happened: 30 seconds into the first quarter, a girl and I were going after a loose ball on the ground. I went down first to get it, and she slammed on top of my arm, bending it in the wrong way. As soon as it happened, I couldn’t feel my arm. It was completely numb! I rolled over and tried to get up, but my coach said to just chill for a second. We walked back over to the bench and I sat down. Still couldn’t feel my arm at this point.

Sitting down, I thought I just banged it and that maybe the pain would go away within a few minutes. A few trainers came up to me and had me do some simple exercises. My fingers were too numb to coil up and any way I moved my arm, I wanted to cry. That wasn’t good! Putting ice on it didn’t help either! I was in so much pain but knew I had to toughen up and get over it. I wanted to play, but my arm was still numb and throbbing in the fourth quarter!

The ride back to school was painful and long. I called mom, told her nothing was wrong, but to meet me at the emergency room. I still laugh today at how calm I was compared to the anxiousness in my mother’s voice! As soon as I got to my car, I rushed myself over to the emergency room. After a few x-rays, they said they couldn’t tell what was wrong because there was too much swelling. They wrapped me up in a splint and sling and sent me on my way.

A few days later, we went to an orthopedic doctor and ran some more x-rays. The results were in: my elbow was broken! This was the first time I had ever broken a bone, so I was scared and bummed that I would be out of basketball for a few weeks. They took the smelly splint off of me and told me to only wear the sling, since there was nothing they could do to protect that bone. My job: to not move it for 3 weeks! Easier said than done!

After three weeks of literally slinging my left arm around, I went back for more x-rays. It still wasn’t healed! They told me I was going to be out for another 2 weeks! What a drag! Nevertheless, I endured the sedentary days and now am finally fully recovered! This past week I finally got to dress out in my jersey again and play in a Christmas tournament. Now I wear a brace; unfortunately I can’t have a pink one cause it doesn’t match my jersey! I am so happy to be back playing the sport I love! Now all I’ll need is a little more elbow room!

My New Year’s Resolution

“Resolution” is defined as: a resolve or determination; to make a firm resolution to do something; the act of resolving or determining upon an action or course of action, method, procedure, etc. Each year millions of people make New Year’s resolutions. Whether it is to lose weight, grow stronger in their religion or to simply spend less, the basic concept is simple. We all want to do better and be better people. The year’s end is prime time to take stock of the good, the bad, the beautiful and the beautifully imperfect, with hopes that the next year will be better.

This is the first year that I am making a New Year’s Resolution. Strange I know. I’ve never really been one to sit down and write out my goals or in this case, a resolution. But after a dynamic year full of growth and possibilities, I’ve realized one thing; the only thing that you can count on is change. How you adapt to it and prepare for it is up to you. With that being said, my single New Year’s Resolution is to change the way that I view the world. A realist by nature and pragmatist by education and training, I see the world as it is, in hi-res. In 2012, I want to see the world through rose colored glasses. Optimism is the essence of faith based living. My hope is that my journey will lead me to a place where my faith is strengthened and my vision, although a tinted in pink, is clearer than before.

Have you ever started making a to-do list, and every time you cross off one item, you realize that there are 3 more that you forgot to add? That is the story of my life! Although it can be tiring at times, I wouldn’t have it any other way. We all need a little down time, and I’ve used the holidays to relax and gear up for 2012. My goal is to make 2012, on of my best years yet!

From my platform work, to working with the American Heart of Association, 2012 is a year that is filled with opportunities! I for one can’t wait to take advantage of all of them. Planning for my reading rooms is well under way and I have a lot of new and exciting alliances and initiatives that I can’t wait to launch. I hope that you all will continue to support and follow me on my journey. None of this would be possible without the support of the International System! Christmastime

Christmas is a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with loved ones. My family is absolutely huge, so I have a lot to celebrate with! Here is what my Christmas weekend looked like!

Christmas Eve was spent at my Aunt Lori’s house. With 14 aunts and uncles, 15 cousins, grandparents, my parents, and my little brother and sister, it got crazy!

It’s amazing how many people we can fit into my aunt’s living room! Everyone brings a dish of food and a 2 liter; we always go through every bowl! My personal favorite: my aunt’s chocolate pie and granny’s peanut butter pinwheels! YUM!

My cousins and I always exchange gifts between each other, and share many laughs along the way!

Then comes Christmas morning. My little brother, Daxx, and little sister, Jaecee Rae, woke up around 7:30 a.m. to head downstairs to see what Santa brought!

They always look so cute in their Christmas pajamas, and the excitement on their faces after opening each present makes the day even better! After we have breakfast and finish opening our presents, we head over to my Granny Tipton’s house for another round! Christmas day is always spent with family, the best gift.

Gingerbread

Christmas is my favorite time of year! The music, the snow, the food-I love it all! One of my favorite Christmas past times is decorating gingerbread houses! My brother and sister joined in on the fun as well!

Icing was tossed and gum drops were eaten, but this was the final result of my gingerbread house! After 2 hours of gluing and decorating, the masterpiece was complete!

My little brother, Daxx, and little sister, Jaecee Rae, laughed and giggled throughout their process! They made a village of tiny gingerbread houses, a lengthy process!

Romania Animal Rescue, Inc. (RAR) established the first free spay/neuter program for the impoverished people of Romania. “RAR's Trap/Neuter/Release program enables animal caregivers to bring in their cats and dogs to be treated for parasites, vaccinated, and neutered at no cost. RAR returns them to the caregiver and to their previous location.” This year they have surpassed their goal of funding 12,000 spay/neuters! Their new total: 12,835!

PAWS (Pets Are Worth Saving) Chicago is the city’s largest no-kill humane organization. Since their founding in 1997, they have decreased the city’s number of homeless dogs and cats by 50%! They are “working to build a No Kill Chicago.” They have found homes for over 4,400 pets in 2011! This year they unveiled The GusMobile, a spay/neuter van which enables them to bring free and low-cost spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations and education to Chicago neighborhoods that are most in need, sterilizing over 18,000 pets!

FiXiT Foundation was founded in 2009 in Norfolk, Virginia. They provide low cost spay/neuter operations through “conducting market research studies to identify and implement the ‘tipping point’ that will successfully persuade people to spay and neuter their animals.” They are currently working on the Final Fix-“a case study in a closed population to demonstrate the effectiveness of their strategy of targeted messaging and incentive-based promotions in increasing demand for spay and neuter.”

Tri-County Humane Society in St. Cloud, Minnesota has been servicing the animals of Central Minnesota since 1974. This year they have launched the No Pet Left Undone Spay/Neuter Initiative. They are “fully committed to spaying and neutering 100% of the animals before they are adopted from the shelter.”

The nation’s largest and most effective animal protection organization is The Humane Society of the United States. I am honored to work with this organization who reaches out to animal groups all around the world. Just in 2010 they provided direct care and relief to about 100,000 animals!

Bundle Up!

Sipping hot cocoa and wearing ear muffs sure does keep me warm! But we can’t all say the same for our pets. Certain dogs are more affected by the cold than others, particularly older pets and/or those with certain ailments, like arthritis. Here are some tips for keeping your pet cozy and warm!

• Keep them indoors! The best way to beat the cold is to avoid facing it. Plus, this allots more cuddle time with your furry friend by the fire place!

• If you do decide to take your dog out, check the temperature and wind chill first. Sometimes it can be harsher than it seems.

• Pets do have fur but some coats of fur aren’t as thick as others. Keep a sweater on them for added insulation.

• If you have an outside dog, make sure you insulate their house properly. Bring in a heater if necessary.

• Dogs use up more calories in the winter trying to conserve heat. Provide more food for them. Hey, if we stock up around the holidays, pets deserve and extra helping too!

• WARNING: Cats seek warmth in the engine of a car, so bang on the hood of your car before starting it.

The weather outside is frightful but the puppies and kitties are so delightful, and since they’ve no place to go…adopt, adopt, adopt! Ultimately, shelters are chillier than a home. Rescue a dog, cat, puppy, or kitten from a shelter and warm them up in your loving, forever home!

Queen’s Holiday Brunch

The best thing about the Holiday Season is the celebrations! It is always great to reconnect with friends and family and to make new friends. This Sunday I attended a Queen’s Holiday Brunch, hosted by my former director, DeShawn Shepard. It was a great opportunity for current titleholders to meet formers. There were plenty of stories, tips and pancakes!

It’s one thing to see pictures but, it’s always nice to have a conversation and few laughs. I was especially excited about chatting with Ashley Dixon, Miss Virginia International 2009. Ashley is attending law school in California so we had plenty to chat about. Then there was Jessica Riker, Miss Pre-teen Virginia International 2011. Who would have known that we share a love for spicy food! She is officially my hot sauce twin!

Bark, Woof, Ho Ho Ho! Last weekend my furry best friend and Jurnee’s Journey mascot, Chi-Chi, and I participated in the Santa Special AniMile! We raced through downtown Kingsport, Tennessee to raise money for the Sullivan County Humane Society!! Chi-Chi and I met many new furry friends! My little brother, Daxx, raced with us as well!

Everyone was in the holiday spirit!

Oscar is a mutt with a leg deformity. His owner said it was very common for his breed. Nonetheless, Oscar still raced in the AniMile and was definitely a crowd favorite!

From Chihuahuas to Great Danes, every dog was racing!

Over 400 participated in this event!

Chi-Chi’s little legs were getting tired, so I had to carrying her through the finish line!

Chi-Chi, Daxx, and I enjoyed a great workout in beautiful weather; a great way to kick off the holiday season!

1. Bible
Carrying a book, magazine, or newspaper on the go takes up a lot of space! With this app, the Bible is compacted into my tiny phone for easy reading on the go!

2. Humane TV

Stay connected with the work of The Humane Society of the United States by watching the amazing and inspiring short videos that truly celebrate animals. Channels include: Factory Farming, Animal Fighting & Cruelty, Wildlife Abuse, Puppy Mills, Animals & Religion, and many more! Whichever video you feel most moved by, you can post it to Facebook or Twitter with the share feature.

3. Social networking

This generation is growing up using social networking to connect with friends, family, and business. My favorite social networking sites are Facebook and Twitter. Whether you’re catching up with distant family on Facebook, or following the latest trends on Twitter, these groups have their very own apps that help keep you updated 24/7.

Giving to Pets

It’s Christmastime-my favorite season! Holiday cheer is around every corner, and a giving spirit is washed over everyone. While shoppers are searching for the perfect gift for their friends and families, don’t forget your furry friend! Pets deserve a portion of our giving spirit too! Here are some “bone”-a fide ideas to treat your pet this holiday season!

Donate! The best way to show pets your love is to give back to their friends that don’t have homes. Check out HSUS.org, ASPCA.org, or your favorite animal charity and make a donation! Monetary donations are always great, but shelters need other items too! Donating blankets, cleaning supplies, or food will help your local shelter care for the millions of homeless pets that enter shelters every year.

Clothes! Pets have fur but the chilly weather can be toilsome. A red and green dress or sweater is a fashionable touch for the holiday! Check out the pet clothing aisle at Wal Mart or PetSmart for all kinds of cute clothing items that will keep your pet warm.
A new collar! Pets are always looking for adventure and can sometimes get lost from their home. A new, brightly colored collar is not only fashion forward, but can help save your pet from going to the pound. TIP: For smaller dogs and all sized cats, a collar with a bell is very helpful for easy tracking around the house.

Adopt! Every DAY in America 20,000 animals are euthanized because shelters do not have the space to hold them. Animal shelters are becoming more and more crowded and have worse conditions in the cold winter months. Save an animal from being another statistic and adopt from your shelter today! TIP: Pet stores get most or all of their inventory from puppy mills. Please, don’t shop-adopt!!

We are given so much every day and celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, the greatest gift of all, reminds me of how fortunate I am. Puppies and kittens aren’t as fortunate as we humans are. Please, spread some cheer this holiday season and show pets everywhere how grateful we are for them. It’s our responsibility to take care of the animals. No matter what you give, a pet will always return that back ten times over in love.

Sugar and the Holidays

Are all sugars bad?
No, but sugars add calories and zero nutrients to food. Adding a limited amount of sugars to foods that provide important nutrients—such as whole-grain cereal, flavored milk or yogurt—to improve their taste, especially for children, is a better use of added sugars than nutrient-poor, highly sweetened foods.

How can I tell by looking at a Nutritions Facts panel if a product has added sugars?
Current nutrition labels don’t list the amount of added sugars (alone) in a product. The line for “sugars” you see on a nutrition label includes both added and naturally occurring sugars in the product. Naturally occurring sugars are found in milk (lactose) and fruit (fructose). Any product that contains milk (such as yogurt, milk, cream) or fruit (fresh, dried) contains some natural sugars. But you can read the ingredient list on a processed food’s label to tell if the product contains added sugars. Names for added sugars on labels include:Brown sugar, Corn sweetener, Corn syrup,Sugar molecules ending in “ose” (dextrose, fructose, glucose, lactose, maltose, sucrose), High-fructose corn syrup, Fruit juice concentrates, Honey, Invert sugar, Malt sugar, Molasses, Raw sugar, Sugar and Syrup.

What are added sugars?
Added sugars (or added sweeteners) include natural sugars (such as white sugar, brown sugar and honey) as well as other caloric sweeteners that are chemically manufactured (such as high fructose corn syrup).

Why are sugars added to food?
Sugars are often added to food during processing to improve the taste of certain foods.

What does the AHA recommend as a limit for daily added sugars intake?
Your daily discretionary calorie allowance consists of calories available after meeting nutrient needs—these calories don’t contribute to weight gain. The American Heart Association recommends that no more than half of your daily discretionary calorie allowance come from added sugars. For most American women, this is no more than 100 calories per day and no more than 150 per day for men (or about 6 teaspoons a day for women and 9 teaspoons a day for men). Sugar’s primary role in the body is to provide energy (calories). To get the nutrients you need, eat a diet that’s rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, fish, poultry and low-fat or fat-free dairy products. Typically, foods high in added sugars do not have the nutrients the body needs and only contain extra calories.

How many calories are in 1 teaspoon (tsp) of sugar?
One teaspoon (tsp) of sugar has about 4 grams of sugar and 16 calories.

What foods and beverages are the main sources of added sugars in Americans' diets?
Regular soft drinks; sugars and candy; cakes, cookies, pies; fruit drinks (fruitades and fruit punch); dairy desserts and milk products (ice cream, sweetened yogurt, and sweetened milk); and other grains (cinnamon toast and honey-nut waffles). Extreme Couponing Meets Extreme Giving!

Money is tight. We all have had to buckle down and tighten our belts. As a result, a lot of charities are not receiving the same level of donations that they once did. Food pantries are reporting record lows and organizations such as the Salvation Army are trying to figure out how to encourage donors to give and how to stretch the donations that they receive. Each year I participate in the Salvation Army’s Stocking Stuffer Program and I donate to my local Manna Food Center.

After watching an episode of Extreme Couponing, I realized that I could stretch the money that I spend on food donations by couponing! First, I went to the Manna Food Center website, www.mannafood.org. Under the “Donate Food” tab, they have a “Wish List” of food items. I reviewed the list, and then I went to www.sundaysaver.com to look at the circulars for the major grocery stores and discount stores in my area. I searched for coupons for the items identified on the Wish List. It was very easy and after only about 30 minutes I found the coupons that I needed! In the end, I was able to give more and save more at the same time, a Win-Win situation!

If you don’t have a lot of money, but you still want to help others who are less fortunate, coupons are a great way to make your money go further, for yourself and for others!

United Armed Forces Foundation’s Children’s Holiday Party!

This past Saturday I was a special guest at the United Armed Forces Foundation’s Children’s Holiday Party! I was invited by Dawn Hicks, Mrs. Pennsylvania International 2011, who served in the United States Air Force for 9 years. The event kicked off with a magic show that was a ton of fun. Next, there were arts and crafts, a Moonbounce and a DJ to keep the party going. Julia Pauline, Miss Pennsylvania International and Margo Huffman, Miss Maryland International, danced the day away! I have to admit that Miss Maryland International, Chardia Murray, Mrs. Maryland International 2011, Sandra Bryan-Grier, and I had a blast in the Moonbounce!

Different stations were set up throughout the room. Kids could get “Princess Makeovers,” “Rambo Transformations,” or even decorate cupcakes! The room was alive with fun! Then, there was a performance by the US Air Force Honor Guard! They were absolutely amazing! I can’t twirl a toothbrush; forget a rifle :) Talk about skill! It was a privilege to give back to my military community and to do so with my International sister queens.

Homecoming

What do you get when you combine basketball and cocktail dresses? Homecoming! During basketball season at my high school, we have a full week of showing our school spirit by dressing up in 80s fashion, tacky attire, formal dresses, our favorite sports team jersey, and our school colors!

My friend Courtney won the best 80s costume for the whole school! Well deserved!

The final day, Friday, the student body piles in our gymnasium for a pep rally, a basketball game and the presentation of the homecoming court!

For my school, 2 freshman, sophomore, and junior couples are picked, along with 5 senior couples. It was a huge honor to be chosen by my peers to represent the junior class! Being in homecoming court and on the basketball team made the week especially fun!

Papaw's Portrait

“Papaw, get a canvas; I just won!” My grandfather, Wayne Allen, has been a professional artist for the past 50 years. He graduated from Harris School of Advertising Art, majoring in fiction illustration. He has painted over 100 portraits, including famed guitarist Chet Atkins and his wife Leona, as well as President Kennedy on a Specialty Worker magazine cover. He has also prepared over 500 magazine covers for Union Trade journals, many brochures, institutional advertising pieces and Christmas Cards, etc. As you can see, he is extremely talented!

Before competing in Chicago my papaw told me, “Honey, there are 16 of you grandchildren and I can’t paint portraits of all of you, but if you bring home the crown of Miss Teen International, I will paint a portrait of you.” Immediately after my crowning, the first thing I did was give papaw a call!

Prior to sketching, he took hundreds of photos of me standing in different positions so that he could get the exact model he wanted. After 3 weeks of secrecy, he finally unveiled the portrait!

This was also the feature article on the front page of the Hawkins Today newspaper!

He usually signs his portraits at the bottom "Wayne Allen" but on this portrait he signed “Papaw Allen, 143.”

Twins!

My papaw always adds a special touch to his portraits: he hides my granny’s name somewhere! See if you can find “Peg”!

Although this is a portrait of the outside, he said that this was the exact replica of what he saw in me. I cannot be more thankful to be honored in this way. He is one incredible artist with a heart bigger than a canvas! This treasured heirloom is a captured moment in time through my papaw's eyes that I will forever cherish.

Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

Want to know my secret? Eat. Before starting any weight loss program, you always want to check with your doctor. For me, as a fitness instructor 24/7, I enjoy eating during the holidays. Protein helps build muscles, so the turkey, ham, or whatever protein your family tradition calls for – eat it. And, don’t feel guilty about going for seconds. The rule of thumb is that one serving of protein should equal the size of your fist. So long as you engage in some sort of physical activity that elevates your heart rate for 20 minutes at least 3x per week, you’ll be fine. Stressing over how much you enjoyed your holiday dinners will actually be more harmful for you, so go ahead and eat.

And lets talk vegetables…you want to eat those too. The only thing I would recommend not taking a double helping of is carbs. My rule of thumb is to pick the one I just can’t live without. Holidays for me are multiple days of an array of fabulous food. So, day 1 will be a single serving of homemade sweet potato casserole. Day 2, I’ll enjoy a homemade role with butter. Day 3, I’ll take that single serving of buttermilk mashed potatoes, and then day 4 I’ll select the homemade cheese grits. (mmmmm good!)

Another good rule of thumb is not to skip meals. If you feel full from dinner the night before, enjoy a protein shake or an egg the next morning. You owe it to your metabolism to keep it going. For me, breakfast is protein – egg whites are my favorite, paired with oats. (I will admit, it is hard not to reach for a cookie for breakfast...and sometimes I do as I am on my way out the door headed to teach an early AM indoor group cycle class.)

Holiday workouts? I have found that the Wii can be entertaining and physically motivating, so after dinner give everyone 20 minutes to digest and then GAME ON! (Your heart and backside will thank you.)

Father-Daughter Dance

I had the honor of being a surprise guest at a Father-Daughter Dance! The purpose of the dance was to provide fathers and their daughters with fun bonding time and to reinforce the importance of positive male role models in the lives of girls and young ladies. As a surprise guest, I was smuggled through a side door so that none of the little girls could see me. Then, after everyone was seated I was introduced to a room full of the sweetest little girls ever! They were thrilled!

The little girls wore colorful tiaras because the theme of the night was that all little girls are princesses. I shared a few words with them about my relationship with my father and then it was off to the dance floor to boogie! We danced the night away! I am always up for a good party, but I could barely keep up with these little party animals. I don’t know whether it was the cake or the fruit punch, but the energy in that room was in high-gear. In addition to dancing, I spent the evening getting to know the girls. Here are just a few pictures. Enjoy!

How to Help a Child Who is Struggling with Reading

I recently attended an educational forum in which parents discussed the most effective ways of helping a child who is struggling with reading. This can be an especially difficult problem for a parent to deal with. Unfortunately, a lot of parents feel lost, like they don’t have the right tools to help their children.

If your child is struggling with reading, the first thing you should do is seek expert advice. Children struggle with reading for various reasons. Sometimes, it may be due to a learning disability. Early diagnosis is imperative! By consulting with an expert, you can identify the exact reason that your child is struggling and focus in on the best course of action to help them succeed.

Additionally, as with most things, a little confidence goes a long way. A big part of helping your child to become a successful reader, is working daily to build their confidence and self esteem. For a child who is struggling with reading, being called on to read in front of their class can be a terrifying experience that cripples their self esteem. Sadly, it usually isn’t until a child has read in front of the class on numerous occasions that the teacher realizes that the child is struggling with reading and alerts the parents. By that time, significant damage can be done.

Parents can help undo this damage by devoting as little as 30 minutes a day to reading with their child. Reading with your child helps builds their self confidence in a number of ways. First, your praise and encouragement gives them the much needed boost to persevere and tackle difficult words. Second, your home is a safe space. Without the fear of embarrassment, children are less likely to feel ashamed of their difficulties. Third, practice makes perfect. The more a child a reads at home, the better he or she will become at reading. As their confidence grows, so will their skill and desire to read.

Champions Week in Las Vegas

As if there aren’t a million things to do in Vegas, NASCAR descended on this town and added the racing excitement everywhere you turn. For me, ever since I landed, I’ve been running a million miles a minute – and haven’t hit a slot machine, yet. (But that’s ok, because I’m not much of a gambler – shopping is much more of a sure thing.)

Wednesday night was a reception at the Sprint Lounge. Thursday morning was the annual Myers Brothers NMPA Luncheon at the Bellagio. And on Thursday night, for the second year, fans, drivers and dignitaries enjoyed an event called “After The Lap” at The Joint in the Hard Rock. Tickets were available for the public for a $20 donation earmarked for The NASCAR Foundation. A big thank you to Coca-Cola, Ford and Sprint for putting on the event and to the over 5,000 fans packed the sold out event!

The end of a season-long adventure for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series known as Champion Week. The top 12 drivers, including the new champion, Tony Stewart, will be honored at the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series awards banquet in the Wynn. You can watch at home on Friday 12/2 starting at 9pm EST on SPEED Channel. The winner of the Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award will be announced and the winner receives $100,000 for the charity they represent and a new Ford vehicle. There is much anticipation and excitement for this announcement…stay tuned!

We all multitasking in some way, whether it’s making coffee and toast at the same time, or driving our car and singing along to the radio. It’s human nature. So, when taking on additional responsibilities of being Mrs. International and having the opportunity to work with the American Heart Association, I welcomed it all with open arms.

I get asked many times, “How can you be representing The NASCAR Foundation and also the American Heart Association?” It’s all in organization. The majority of my appearances and volunteer time is dedicated to The NASCAR Foundation, but being Mrs. International offered the opportunity to also learn about the education and resources available from the American Heart Association and in turn be a voice to share that knowledge. Being Mrs. International is not unlike my day job where I am always held to high standards, knowing I represent a brand and my actions can impact others perceptions. So, I am always prepared to step up and speak on behalf of the American Heart Association whether it is talking with sponsors via conference calls, coordinating events or making personal appearances.

“The Last Heart Attack”

After I was done stuffing my face, the last thing that I expected to watch was a special on Heart Attacks. But that is just what I did. As I was flipping through the channels, I came across a special on CNN called “The Last Heart Attack.” It was presented by CNN’s chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta. It was by far one of the most informative specials that I have ever watched. Dr. Gupta explored the ins and outs of heart disease from the perspective of the Dr., the patient, and the researcher. Using former President Bill Clinton and other patients as “case studies” he interviewed them about their diet, exercise habits and medical history. Each patient had a different story to tell, and took a different approach to treatment. Some, such as President Clinton, took the traditional route, undergoing surgery and making drastic changes to his diet post operation. Other’s, took the non traditional route, and adopted the controversial Esselstyn Diet in which they opt out of surgery and clear their arteries through changing the way that they eat. I’m not talking, eating an occasional salad. The diet’s focus is plant based nutrition, the mantra being, don’t anything with a face or a mother. This diet is still being studied and evaluated, anyone even considering it should consult their physician first.

Dr. Gupta spoke to experts about new developments in diagnosing, preventing and treating Heart Disease. For me, the most fascinating segment was the one on diet and Heart Disease. Did you know that there are some societies in which there are zero incidents of Heart Disease! After much study, the reasons are obvious. They lead very heart healthy lifestyles, the basis of which is a healthy diet. Dr. Gupta also went out on a limb and had his own heart and arteries analyzed. Last Tuesday my arm was injured in a basketball game. The x-rays showed that the radial head is broken in my left elbow. In other words, no basketball for two weeks! I will definitely be “blinging” up my sling!

I would like to thank everyone for all the prayers that have been sent up to the One True Healer! Thank you for bearing with me!

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade!

I can’t remember a single Thanksgiving that I did not watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Whether I was cooking or just camped out in front of the T.V., I was always left in awe at the floats, enormous balloons and performances. Needless to say, I jumped at the opportunity to attend this year’s parade. As with everything I do, things did not go as planned. Long story short, my family and I arrived in New York at 4 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning! Ticket holders were to line up at 7 a.m. so that left us with an hour to sleep if we wanted to make it into the city and get in line. We probably could’ve slept longer, but we didn’t want to leave anything to chance. After a quick nap and a call to a cab company we were off. Groggy, but in good spirits, our cab driver’s jokes and driving woke us up! He was friendly and all things New York.

When we got to the corner of Columbus and 71st street, it was about 6:30 a.m. and ticketholders were being waived in. We got in line and waited to be seated on the bleachers. You could sense the excitement in the air. Everyone was in fantastic spirits and excited about the parade. Then came the wait. Two and half hours on ice cold bleachers!! Lucky for us, it wasn’t as cold as in year’s past and there was more than ample sunlight.

“Happy Thanksgiving!! Welcome to the Macy’s Parade” roller-bladers dressed as elves whizzed down the street, throwing confetti and getting the crowd ready for the parade. I was so excited I thought I might burst. As I spotted the first floats and the Great American Marching Band, I couldn’t help but cheer!! Was I really sitting in Central Park West watching the Macy’s Parade!! I can’t even begin to describe what it was like to see massive balloons hovering above you! Or to watch high school band members live out their dreams as they played and performed in the streets of New York! But, one of the coolest parts wasn’t the parade at all. It was watching children, knee high to a toilet tissue stand, getting up and watching the parade in their pajamas from their apartment windows. Wow! They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so here you go!!

Battle of the NASCAR Kids

The first ever Battle of the NASCAR Kids Charity Video Game Tournament, racing the new NASCAR Unleashed video game at Homestead Miami Speedway, resulted in Ryan Blaney taking the trophy.

Faith Yeley, Sebastian Montoya, Carson Kvapil, Todd Gilliland and Ryan Blaney were featured along with two random wild card selections from the crowd and child representative from the Boys and Girls Club, Esmeralda. Each child was surrounded by tons of friends and family cheering for them.

Each NASCAR child was competing for a purpose, as each received a $5,000 donation made to their charity of choice. J.J. Yeley’s daughter Faith competed for the Jake Raborn Foundation, Juan Pablo Montoya’s son Sebastian competed for Formula Smiles, Travis Kvapil’s son Carson competed for NASCAR Dreams, David Gilliland’s son Todd competed for Sherrills Ford Optimist Park and David Blaney’s son Ryan competed for Alzheimer’s Association.

We are very thankful the weather held out for this event. On Friday, the sky opened up with severe weather causing the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice sessions to be rescheduled for Saturday morning. On Saturday morning while the dad’s were on-track, the families banded together even more to support all the children. Even the Grandma’s and Grandpa’s piled on golf carts to come cheer on their grandchildren – and even help them “warm up” by competing against them during the video game practice sessions. This was truly a family affair.

A big thank you to Activision for their ongoing mission to support charities, worldwide. Being able to create an event to empower kids to make a difference is simply outstanding. We look forward to a bigger and better event next year!

Build Your Platform…Build Your Resume

Everyone knows that a platform should be a cause that is near and dear to heart. Such that you would be willing to work for free to promote it. However, a lot of people don’t realize that the work that they do for their platform often entails developing and implementing highly marketable skills. Skills, that could give you a competitive advantage in the job market and make you all the more attractive to potential employers. Think of your platform work as a tool in your toolkit. Each tool does something different, but they each work together for the common goal of helping you build your brand and achieve success on your own merits. Here are some tips.

1. Become a skilled volunteer. Seek out volunteer organizations and opportunities that will allow you to build your skill set. You would be amazed at the number of organizations that need volunteers who are devoted to specific high level tasks such as grant writing, community organizing, fundraising, giving presentations etc., and as such, the organizations are willing to train and mentor you. This can be especially beneficial because the training that you receive does not occur in a high stakes work environment; hence there is a different level of pressure. These are highly sought after skills that can enhance anyone’s resume, regardless of their career field.

2. Become an expert. What is your platform? Why is it important? What are some national facts about your platform? What are some state specific facts about your platform? What organizations have aligned themselves with your specific cause? These are questions that most of us tackle during interview prep. But, if a person on the street or a reporter were to ask you these questions, and you were to respond in a thoughtful and thorough manner, they would be impressed by the depth of your knowledge. Stay on top of your platform and current developments. That way, in addition to the skills that you are building, you become the go to person on that particular topic. You never know when your platform knowledge will lead to a career opportunity.

3. Understand what it is that you do. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I don’t even think about the breadth of knowledge or experience that I have gained through my volunteer efforts. But, when I take the time to actually think about it, I am amazed. Take some time to evaluate your efforts. Only then will you be able to comprehend the skills that you have developed or in the alternative, identify skills that you would like to develop.

4. Be able to articulate your skills. It’s one thing to know what it is that you do. But, can you communicate it in a way that accurately conveys your skills? There is a fine line between embellishment and self promotion. So honesty is always the best policy. However, women tend to shy away from self promotion because we don’t want to be viewed as bragging. Studies have consistently demonstrated that women are paid less and are less likely to be considered for job promotions because they don’t self promote to the same extent as men. You can be the best lawyer in the world but if no one knows it… You are your best advocate. You know your worth, so don’t be afraid to express it to others. After you have determined what it is that you do, choose action verbs and adjectives that reflect your skill level and accomplishments. Are you an advocate? Are you a fundraiser? Are you a liaison? Do you work with national nonprofits? Do you develop and implement initiatives? What you may think of as merely a day in the life of a titleholder, may be extremely impressive to a potential employer.

Donation To Kick Off Capital Campaign For New Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Last week, The NASCAR Foundation helped kick off Homestead Hospital’s capital campaign to build and equip a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with a check presentation for $250,000. Creating a Level II NICU is a top priority, as more than 150 babies born each year at Homestead Hospital need intensive care that currently is provided only at hospitals located more than 20 miles away. This distance between hospital and home creates hardships for families and interferes with the parental bonding that is so vital to a newborn’s health during the first weeks of life. A Level II NICU at Homestead Hospital will allow these babies and their families to stay close to home while receiving the care they need.

The NASCAR Foundation, through Betty Jane France and her Speediatrics unit, has played a crucial role in the success of Homestead Hospital’s pediatric programs. The unique unit is one of only two in the country founded by France and is the only Emergency Center in south Miami-Dade County dedicated to children. Brought to Homestead Hospital in 2002, more than 23,000 patient visits a year are handled in the Speediatrics Children’s Emergency Center.

Part of the donation made by The NASCAR Foundation will be used to purchase Giraffe OmniBed Isolete Incubators, which are the most advanced and developmentally supportive microenvironments available today. The beds combine state of the art technology and thermal performance to create a healing environment for intensively ill newborns.

In addition, the ceremony honored Betty Jane France for her vision, work and dedication to Speediatrics at Homestead Hospital and Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Fla., the first hospital to receive the racing-themed pediatric center. A portrait of Mrs. France was unveiled during the ceremony, which will be permanently on display in the Speediatrics unit.

Giving Thanks

I can remember my parents saying to me, “Stop being ungrateful!” It was a command and an admonishment that always left me irate and confused. In my head, I was grateful. I thought that I appreciated them and the things that I had, so I did not understand their frustration. I knew that I was grateful. So, how could they tell me what I was or was not? After all, they were not inside of my head. I laugh just thinking about it. It wasn’t until I got older that I began to realize what they meant.

Being grateful is not just a state of mind. It is not sufficient to just internally acknowledge your gratitude. Being grateful requires action. It means not only being aware of what you have, but being aware of what others don’t have, being able to sympathize and above all else empathize with them. It means working hard in everything that you do, to show that you are grateful for the opportunity. It means remembering, “Who packed your Parachute.” It means acknowledging the grace and compassion that has been extended to you and paying it forward. It means working to ensure that others have the same opportunities that you have had and more. It means not being too busy to say, “please,” “thank you,” “yes ma’am,” or “no sir.”

On this Thanksgiving, like everyone else, I will reflect on the many blessings that have been bestowed upon me. But there is one more element to giving thanks that I would like to incorporate. Each day, I pray that my actions reflect my gratitude-that I show my thanks, through giving to others. That my words inspire, comfort or encourage at least one person. And that I find the lesson and beauty in every challenge.

9 years ago I visited an awful place-a puppy mill. Little did I know what it was at the time, but I knew one thing-you were special. It was heart breaking to see you squirming and crying for help amidst all the chaos of the other puppies. As the runt of your litter, you stood out. Your black hair, white dipped tail, and white paws set you apart from your brothers and sisters who were toppling on you. I could see in your eyes and knew in my heart that you belonged in our home.

Rescuing you from that horrible place was a difficult task, but well worth it. You brought life into our home and made us appreciate the “little” things in life. From the moment we knew you were from a puppy mill, a burden was placed in my heart to help your other friends who were suffering in those harsh conditions. You are my inspiration for promoting adoption and spay/neutering through our organization, Jurnee’s Journey: Helping All God’s Creations.

As the official mascot and inspiration, you, Chi-Chi, have touched many animals’ and humans’ lives. You are a constant reminder that there is hope and that great things do come in small packages.

As a former lifeguard and water baby, I am much more mindful of taking care of my skin as I get older. I'm always happy to share my "secrets" because we can always learn from one another, so below is a quick list of my top 10 must have beauty products.

More Than Milk

When you see a cow, what do you think? Milk? Moo? Old McDonald? These are very common thoughts, but cows are so much more than milk!

This past weekend I traveled to Louisville, Kentucky to the 38^th annual North American International Livestock Expo. The expo was all about sheep, horses, and cows…oh my! All weekend farmers from all around the world gathered together to show their livestock! I like to think of livestock shows as an animal beauty pageant; they are based on how well and healthy the animal looks (physical fitness) and the overall presentation (evening gown).

One of the most interesting things about livestock shows is how the animal is treated before, during, after competition. Prior to a show, the show heifers (female cows) are treated with the highest regards. They are bathed each day that they are at a show, as well as blown dry. The heifers always eat twice a day. A great deal of time is spent grooming the calves to ensure that their hair is perfect. Basically, they must go into hair and makeup before on stage competition.

The judges look for many different things in a good show heifer, such as the healthiness of the coat of hair, the correct amount of fat - not too much and not too little, it must be very thick and healthy, all of the feet must be pointing in the same direction, and the cow must have a large bone structure. All in all, the show person must take special care of the animal and treat it humanely.

Livestock shows give kids and adults the opportunity to meet people from all around the world. Like pageants, they require a lot of hard work and discipline. Also, scholarships are given to the showmen with the best animal! As you can see, cows are more than just milk.

As I prepared for Nationals I developed a playlist that I entitled “Radar.” Why did I call it “Radar?” Because when I set a goal, achieving that goal is the only thing that is on my Radar. Reflecting on Veterans Day

When I was younger, Veterans Day was a day off from school. Even though my father was an Officer in the military, I didn’t understand the significance of his job or the contribution that he was making to our country. Maybe I didn’t “get it” because everyone around me was in the military. Deployments were a way of life. It actually felt strange for my dad to be home for more than nine consecutive months at a time. I lived on military bases where bombs from field maneuvers shook our houses throughout the day and night. During major conflicts, I watched CNN for clues as to when my dad would be sent away. As a child you worry, but the worry is not the same, nor is your grasp of the gravity of the situation that your parent has volunteered to be in.

It wasn’t until I became an adult that I began to understand what it means to serve your country as member of the United States Military. It means facing your greatest fears and boldly walking into the line of danger, when others are running away. It means sacrificing the precious time that you have with your family, to ensure the safety of others. It means dedicating your life to protecting the freedom that defines America. And in some cases, it means going away and not coming home.

As I look back on this Veterans Day, I am overwhelmed with pride. I am proud of the contributions made by the millions of Americans and their families who serve our country. They are the unsung heroes whose sacrifices we take for granted. But for their courage and honor, the America that we know and love would not exist. From the bottom of my heart, Thank You.

This past week was National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week! The 3,500 animal shelters in the U.S. deserve this special week of recognition for providing a home for strays! Unfortunately, most shelters aren’t adequate for animals to live and for people to work. Many people can't adopt but want to help, and don't know how or maybe don't have the funds to donate. Blame it all my roots…a famous line from a well-known country artist which runs true for me. If it weren’t for teachers, staff and coaches in the Heath City School systems, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

This past Friday, I had the opportunity to present the NASCAR Unites campaign and show videos of the finalists for the Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award to the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students at my old elementary school, Stevenson Elementary School.

The principal, Mrs. Coleman, and her staff have done an exceptional job and have even been recognized by earning the “Excellence with Distinction” award. My introduction by Principal Coleman was truly heartwarming. And, not but ten feet from the gymnasium where my presentation was held was the classroom where I had attended Kindergarten…lots of good memories!

As the students filed into the gym, I looked around, eager and hopeful my time with them would be inspirational. I shared with them a fun video trailer of the new video game, NASCAR Unleashed. Their reactions were so genuine – OHH, COOL! I take pride in working with great companies who make it a priority to give back to their communities and the publisher of this video game, Activision, always looks for fun ways to make a positive impact on communities worldwide. As you may have read, they are the charity sponsor for the Battle of the NASCAR Kids video game tournament which will be held at Homestead Miami Speedway on Saturday, Nov. 19th. In support of my appearance, Activision sent me copies of NASCAR Unleashed to use as a reward for exceptional student leaders at Stevenson.

As my presentation continued, I shared the videos of our 4 finalists for the Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award. I had breakfast with my mom earlier that morning and she shared that I might want to ask the children if they knew what “Humanitarian” meant. Great thought! Thanks, Mom. Living in a world where I interact with adults, I hadn’t thought of explaining that word. “It’s a big word that means helping others,” is the definition my mom offered. And the children definitely comprehended that definition. With big eyes and 100% attention dedicated to watching the videos, the children were eager to talk about each video and understood that they can make a difference at any age.

At the conclusion of my presentation, I had fun Officially Licensed NASCAR prizes to award to the student leaders who had been nominated by their teachers. And then, I had one last surprise for ALL of them – their own NASCAR Unites blue arm band. A small momento to help inspire them to start their own volunteer project, so they can be nominated for this award next year.

Thank you again to Principal Coleman, all the teachers, staff and students. I am so proud of you and look forward to keeping tabs on you all.
